I recently met a former Albert Lea native, Ramona (Karau) Haveraneck. She was in town during the fourth of July and had come back to attend her fathers funeral. It was fun to hear all of the amazing places she has been and all she has accomplished. I wanted to share her story to celebrate the many ways Albert Lean’s are making an impact on the world.
We talked about the many favorite places Albert Lean’s enjoy. She said she CANNOT get her favorite Ice Cream anywhere except Albert Lea, and she also, ALWAYS gets a Jake’s Pizza when she comes home. She remembered spending much of her young life every summer at Academy Park, playing softball & tennis with her sister, and ice skating in the Winter months.
She was very good in track and held a track record in 6th grade for the 50 yard dash for 25+ years, which her beloved friend and 6th grade teacher, Roger Zeman, told her was recently broken! She took Office Ed. classes in high school, learned to type and do shorthand “but my favorite class was my shop class!”
She said, “I also was a member of the Albert Lea Figure Skating Club, and was always out at the rink trying to learn how to skate.” Betty Rake and Carol Colstrup were her coaches.
Many others who have grown up in our community can remember working at similar jobs as Ramona. She worked at these places growing up: McDonalds, Quick Stop, Northpark Drug, The Stables Supper Club, Taco Johns, El’s Fine Foods, The Donut Kettle, The Kahler Hotel, Minneapolis Star & Tribune, and Sibley Elementary School as a Senior on the work program. “I also babysat a lot and most certainly “Walked Beans!” (Which made me know I would NEVER be Farmer’s Wife.) Who else remembers working at these jobs in town?
I enjoyed meeting Ramona, reminiscing about Albert Lea and sharing in the excitement of all of the new businesses Albert Lea is now enjoying. To this day Albert Lea continues to be a community that is committed to helping our students prepare for their adventure to help them achieve their goals and dreams. We hope after they go off to experience the world, they will come back and enjoy the laid back life small town living offers us everyday. A true family\ friendly community. Yet, when Albert Lea is able to help raise amazing leaders such as Ramona, their stories are a joy for us to share as well. Celebrating in all forms, Experiencing Albert Lea to equip our children for what lays ahead of them.
Ramona went on to share with me her story of growing up in Albert Lea and the adventures she would experience. Ramona was born in Rochester, Minnesota and was raised in Albert Lea. She lived in Albert Lea throughout high school and left for Springfield, Mo at age 18 to attend Evangel University.
At age 20 she became a Flight Attendant for American Airlines and met and married her husband, who was a passenger aboard one of her DC10 flights to Los Angeles. She spent 20 years living in many U.S. Cities and abroad as a Military Wife raising two boys while her husband served as a Commander in the U.S.Navy.
Now living in Michigan with her husband; two Golden Retrievers and one cat, Ramona has been focusing on her award Winning Photography Career of 15 years. She started out by photographing her son & his friends Little League Baseball Games, and from there her interests, creativity and expertise has evolved, had she has had great success in local galleries in Michigan, and Ohio and has an eager local following. Ramona has recently created a new line of blank cards called “Man Cards-Manly Cards For Manly Men.” specifically targeting men and the women who are trying to find a masculine blank gift/card for the men in their lives.Currently, as Ramona’s two son’s are both serving our country in the United States Air Force, she is merging her artistic talents and time with Aspect Properties, Rochester Salvage & Supply and Cherry Hill Companies, as well as running her own Photography Company called Silver Heart Photography where she features her Real Estate Photography. Ramona lives in Rochester Hills, Michigan. She also works as Director of Intakes for her family run Senior Meals On Wheels business, serving 16 cities in Oakland County, Michigan.
One of the best things Albert Lea helped her instill was the importance of family. My husband and I enjoy motorcycling, dinners out, gardening and bonfires on our patio with our music & friends, and mostly we love the rare time we get to spend with our boys. One stationed in New Jersey, and the other in Seattle/Tacoma, of whom we are exceedingly proud!
