One of the most important reasons my wife and I stayed in Albert Lea after coming here right out of college to teach was the Albert Lea Community Theatre; ACT. I was a nobody and had little experience on stage or backstage, but I was cast in the chorus of the musical “My Fair Lady,”and met some of the greatest people I’ve ever met! The theatre group were so welcoming and not worried about who you were. There was no status connected to working at the theatre. If you were interested in helping in any way, you were “in”. I still get hugs from people I met back 45 years ago who have remained friends through all these years! It’s amazing!
Albert Lea Community Theatre performs 4 shows each year. The big musical is done in the summer ( July) to accommodate busy schedules and take advantage of college age kids who come home for the summer to work. The other three shows are performed starting in October and run through May. A wide variety of shows are chosen to give our audiences different experiences with live performances.
Not everyone wants to be in a show, and we have many many other places that volunteers can be very helpful in putting a show together.
Backstage crews are needed for designing and building the sets, painting those sets and creating or finding props used by the actors on stage. Designing posters, helping with hair and make-up, and costuming a show all need talented folks to make them happen. You could help by sewing and/or creating costumes. If you are a writer, we need a playbill for each show which includes bios and photos of the actors, summaries of the plot and ads from local businesses to make the playbill pay for itself and not cut into profits from the show. The box office needs friendly people to arrange for tickets. The jobs are endless and so are the rewards.
That’s a huge accomplishment for any community theatre! Come find your spot to shine!!!
